This course is the third of 3 in our 2030 Challenge series.   In this session, we will review the goals of the 2030 Challenge and the implications of the AIA’s commitment to it. The theme of the workshop portion of the course will be communication.  How do we communicate the goals of the 2030 Challenge and socialize and represent the data that has been collected to work towards a carbon neutral built environment?   What are key points of conversation, major data and project information needed?  In this workshop, participants will choose a target audience and create a communication strategy for design teams, consultants, and clients to collect and represent data, as well as display the value of the 2030 Challenge to the building industry.
Participants will be able to:
  1. Comprehend the concepts of the 2030 Challenge and AIA Commitment and the importance of energy data collection and evaluation.
  2. Evaluate strategies for improving firm-wide sustainable literacy of project metrics.
  3. Develop concepts for creating visually compelling graphics that communicate the value of energy data collected in the AIA 2030 DDx platform.
  4. Communicate with clients and colleagues about the benefits of energy tracking and how energy data may influence future work.

Ashleigh Fischer, LEED AP ND
Sustainability Designer, ZGF Architects LLP
Ashleigh Fischer is a sustainability designer with experience in a diverse range of project types, from academia to urban districts. Initially drawn to the architecture industry to create built environments that serve clients and communities alike, Ashleigh developed a keen interest in high-performance design. She now helps guide the sustainable development certification process for ZGF projects including Kashiwa-no-ha Smart City in Japan, which is now the largest LEED Neighborhood Development Plan Platinum-certified smart city in the world. Currently, Ashleigh is supporting the ZGF Vancouver, BC office’s Building and Project Performance Initiative to integrate sustainable design in a developer driven market and rapidly growing built environment. She is a member of the AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) and leads a ZGF collaboration with Portland State University where students aim to resolve local architecture firms’ real-world design issues through research and analysis. Ashleigh earned a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Masters of Architecture from the University of Oregon, where she participated in building systems research and publications at the Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory and conducted an independent research study analyzing passive house building performance.

Heather DeGrella, AIA, LEED AP BD+C
Opsis Architecture, Sustainability Design Leader
Heather DeGrella leverages a diversity of skills gained over 16 years in architectural project management, construction administration, building science research, and sustainability consulting to enable all Opsis project teams to establish and optimize sustainability goals. As the Sustainability Design Leader at Opsis, Heather is involved throughout the full project life cycle from planning and design, through construction, and into operations. She ensures that knowledge of best practices and tools are shared throughout the office, and she challenges the firm to examine its internal operational policies.

LEED accredited since 2003, Heather has worked with the LEED Rating System for over 14 years, and has supported dozens of projects to earn certification. She has worked with design teams, contractors, and owners across the country to manage the integrated design process, recommended appropriate strategies, provide onsite training, and administer LEED and Living Building Challenge certification.

Alex Zelaya and Sarah Post-Holmberg are both Associates at Hacker. They run SEA (Social and Environmental Advocates), the studio’s group that leads the implementation of sustainable design in Hacker’s process and pushes for optimal energy performance on every project.
