The spirit of the Northwest meets traditional Japanese design in the Portland Japanese Garden Expansion, led by Tokyo based Kengo Kuma and Associates partnering with Hacker Architects. This enhanced entrance to the Portland Japanese Garden features a water garden, cultural village, café, classroom, gift shop, library, offices, and gallery spaces – all while taking advantage of opportunities for sustainable design.

Come learn how sustainable design principles are incorporated into this unique interpretation of Japanese architecture.

Learning Objectives:

  1. See how the project adapted to the seismic-sensitive site through building placement and structure.
  2. Experience how universal design makes the garden experience better for all visitors.
  3.  Learn about the heating and cooling comforts provided by the 24 geothermal wells.
  4. Understand the energy efficiency opportunities from decoupled space temperature control from ventilation
