Positively Portland Walking Tours

Pearl District Walking Tour
The Pearl District is an internationally recognized model for high density urban livability, and a must see destination for new arrivals and visitors to this world class city. Join us for an exploration of the past, present and future of this landmark neighborhood.
Historically a warehouse district and rail yard; what we now call the Pearl District was a nearly deserted industrial zone 25 years ago.  Through a visionary public/private partnership that emphasized historic preservation, adaptive re-use and sustainable new construction; we now see a vibrant, walker-friendly neighborhood of shops, restaurants, art galleries and high-rise housing.
One hundred years ago, several of Portland’s prominent architects designed “modern” commercial buildings for important regional and national companies. Many of these early 20th century buildings remain and provide the historic context for the area today. This comfortably paced two hour walking tour covers about one mile on level city sidewalks and streets.

Old Town Chinatown
Discover the history and architecture of Portland’s first commercial district, where over 100 years ago ocean-going ships delivered their passengers and goods in this thriving port city . Learn about Old Town’s “Blazing Center” which hasn’t changed much since the days it was originally filled with brothels, bars and gambling houses. We’ll see some survivors of the “Cast Iron Era” and also swing through Portland’s Chinatown…. that isn’t really Chinatown anymore. Like many neighborhoods in Portland, this district is changing with the times and those changes involve the re-purposing of many underutilized buildings. We’ll have a look at some prominent success stories and works in progress including the “US Custom House (1901) and “Sailors Mission (1881)”. This 2 1/2  hour point to point walking tour will lead us through Old Town and Chinatown and cover less than 2 miles.

These walking tours are led by Portland architectural historian and CFA member Eric Wheeler.

Fee for this narrated tour is $15 – Maximum of 20 participants
